If you want a holiday location offering stunning scenery and a rich culture, you must experience the Madeira festivals. The sun-kissed island is known as the “Pearl of the Atlantic”, and boasts a rich history of traditions and annual celebrations.
In the second article in my series, I explore a selection of Madeira festivals that date back centuries – including the key dates for 2025…
Madeira Carnival – February 26 to March 9, 2025
Widely acknowledged as the “Rio of Europe”, the Madeira Carnival is the first event on the island’s busy calendar and promises an intoxicating combination of colour and rhythms. The two-week, pre-Lenten celebration starts on the Wednesday before the “Entrudo” (Shrove Tuesday, March 4, 2025) and continues until the “Enterro do Osso” on the Saturday after Carnival day.
On the afternoon of Shrove Tuesday the Trapalhão (or slapstick) Parade is full of comedy and satire where everyone is encouraged to wear a costume. Carnival day is the highlight of the fortnight and includes the main parade through the streets of the capital Funchal. Samba groups perform in spectacular costumes attracting thousands of spectators. The Carnival showcases the island’s love of performance and creativity, attracting visitors from around the globe. In fact, every county of the archipelago hosts its own parades and parties with everyone wearing a carnival costume.
Madeira Flower Festival – May 1 to May 25, 2025
One of the most iconic Madeira festivals, this month-long event celebrates the arrival of spring. The streets of Funchal are transformed with floral carpets, while the city is alive with parades, music and colourful floats.
Make sure you visit the Wall of Hope, a floral display created by children to promote peace and unity — reflecting Madeira’s values. The main event is the Allegoric float parade (May 5) involving more than a thousand participants of all ages. One week later there is a parade of classic cars sporting stunning floral arrangements.
Madeira Wine Festival – August 24 to September 14, 2025
In late summer, Madeira’s wine culture takes centre stage. One of the most popular Madeira festivals, this honours the island’s centuries-old winemaking heritage. Visitors can enjoy grape-stomping rituals, sample exquisite Madeira wines and enjoy folk performances. Set in the lush vineyards and charming streets of Madeira, this festival is perfect for food and drink lovers.
Christmas and New Year
Madeira festivals don’t only take place during the warmer months, the island transforms into a winter wonderland during the festive season. Experience dazzling light displays, festive markets, Nativity plays and culinary delights. The New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Funchal is among the most spectacular in the world, earning a Guinness World Record.
